You know, you can make a time capsule and put it up in your attic or basement. There are many advantages -- someone won't dig it up by accident, it'll be easier to find after 55 years, if you move you can take it with you, etc.

A big glass jar might be fun. It will protect the things (if you decide to bury it), and if you don't bury it, you can look at it from time to time and muse about what you put in there and why.

I would put in: the front page of a newspaper. A letter from me/my family to the future, written on acid free paper with acid free ink. Black & white photos (they keep longer). Coins minted in the year you are doing this. A copy of your report card or somthing from your work. A description of your town, and maybe a map. Possibly a midi -- I don't know if the technology will still be available 55 years from now, but it would be a blast from the past. Small toys that are the big trend right now. Possibly some candy (still sealed!) that is popular today. A description of a typical meal. A description of a typical Christmas or other holiday you celebrate.

What a good idea! Wouldn't it be cool to do this every year, maybe at New Year's? And start looking through them 40 years from now? What a fun tradition that would be!

Good luck!

My brother-n-law put his old guns/coins, in PVC pipes.then buried them.He went to a local plumbing company and got the pipe and the closed ends that they can sell you,to put over the ends..He also put duck tape around the ends just in case but it will be water proof inside the PVC pipe without putting the tape on it.
He passed two years ago and we dug up some of the pipes..why he buried an old ax handle we will never know.but one of them had an old ax handle in it.
Try your local plumbing company,or hardware store..they can tell you just how good PVC pipes hold up from outside elements..good luck.
