am curious. I've heard from people that it's something only freaks do, so I would like a first-hand account.

Hello, freak here.

Dungeons and Dragons depends a lot on the people you're playing with and more than anything the Dungeon Master or DM. This is basically the guy that acts as your computer acts when you're playing a video game, except that he can make exceptions and things when he believes it fits. Depending on the DM, this can be a good or a bad thing.

What happens is a bunch of people sit around and pretend to be in the skin of someone that they made up. There are endless rules about how the universe works and most of them are figured by rolling dice. If the rules don't exist, they are made up by the DM. (Which beats the Blue Screen of Death, in my book.) They really don't matter much unless you play.

The idea of Dungons and Dragons is to have a set of rules in place to govern the entire universe (and beyond) in any given time frame or situation. It's not just Elves and Dragons, it could just as easily be Lazers and Robots or last week at School in a paralell universe where dogs can talk. A blank universe where you don't have to be you and the only trouble you get in for anything is imaginary.

It's really not so much for real freaks anymore, no more than Magic Cards or something. (Same company)

It was better when it was, I think. ^_^

It is rather different than the norm, computer gaming as pretty much replaced dice/paper roleplaying games now. So if gaming is a "freak" thing, there are MILLIONS of freaks out there. :)
