Both. You can save stuff on the harddrive, memory cards, the controllers, and memory sticks. You can even email stuff to your computer and then save it there.

It's got an internal HardDrive, slots for GameCube memory cards (for Game Cube games) and has a standard sized SD card slot. The Wii-mote also has on-board storrage, but all I've saved to that so far is my Mii (personal Avatar).

The GameCube needs a memory card.
Nintendo probably used that technology since it already had it.
