i am a 41 yr old biker and agree with young bikers being limited for a few yrs. as its too easy to go find death on a 1000 cc when you are inexperienced. but why should young drivers be allowed to drive powerfull cars when they have just passed thier test as it is plain to see by the deaths on the road that they cannot handle them and mainly show off with a car full of mates. I think they should be limited to a little 1100 to start and progress up when they have gained the experience to handle a bigger car. mr blair hope you read this as it needs something doing

insurance kills young drivers on powerfull cars so not many new drivers can afford them and some 125 bikes learners have are far faster than most cars

This must be a regional thing, in Northern VA young car drivers have many restrictions, not engine size yet to my knowledge. However there is no bike restrictions in size. If you have a complete driver permit (with an M) you can own what you like and drive it.
Personally I think more bikers give it up as dangerous or crash not so much as oversized power but no one ever fits a person to a bike.
If you take a kid who is too tall or too small for the frame of the bike it will handle like crap on the turns. I know a few who insisted on getting the rocket style and complained it was uncomfortable if they rode for more then an hour.
I am on bike 9 after 34 years and have had some bad fitting bikes.
BTW the theory is flawed in the restrictions, I had a 1970 triumph 650 and it was rated in it time as one of the fastest bikes. The speed indicator went up to 130mph and I bet someone could get it pretty close when it was new, (if they where nuts also).

Good question but its not just about Blair.

The problem actually being that while accident statistics are falling they're falling for other road users much quicker than they are for motorcyclists. So we're kinda sticking out a bit.

Brussels are currently planning to make the age even higher for learner riders to help address the accident stats.

Of course, having rich kids buying expensive cars doesn't hurt the economy, the govt will make a tidier sum on the VAT from a Maserati than they will on a 10k sports bike.

I aggree with you but to restrict them on a bike will attempt to keep some of them alive until they pass their car test and then the Imprezza will probably get them

Things are set to change a bit in the next few years but the wheels of change move very slowly unless an MP wants something done and then the change is immediate

Just one other point do all people in your area forget how they were taught to use a roundabout. They have around here.

I started on an 800 cc suzuki boulevard. and the first car I ever drove was my dad's old Chevy Caprice ex cop car. and he thinks im pretty competent with both. sadly i crashed on the boulevard on the tenth, after riding since january. broke my leg. insurance will cover the bike, and my dad said we'd see about getting another bike when we can. I'm either getting a sport bike or an enduro bike that i can take off-road. that boulevard was fun though, it'd do 120, but it didn't amaze me as far as handling went. oh and frankly, I don't think it's the bike that's dangerous, it think it's the yahoos on four wheels that'll look straight at you and pull out in front of you, or run your *** over and not even realize what happened that are dangerous. I had dealings with a few of those, but do to quick thinking made it out of those situations unscratched.

Young drivers are restricted because their insurance is expensive to begin with, so unless the young driver is very rich he will not be able to drive a powerful car. Perhaps this is why so many have no insurance. For years the government has wanted to get motorcycles off the roads. (I rode them for more than 30 years and never hurt myself but many do). Perhaps the govenment will notice this and pass even more laws.

in this area of the large pond, maximum riders are literally not constrained except for the period of a enable era. Even the enable era should be gotten previous through taking a short direction. on the different hand, automobile drivers are literally being constrained through age in many states. Over the following, many get their automobile license as early as conceivable. It makes a small little bit of expertise to equate age with journey if so. for sure, our automobile regulations have no longer something to do with potential - basically circumstances of use. coverage is basically no longer a aspect....it really is effortless to get low coverage on a valuable older motorcar. reckoning on the certain time period, the age of adulthood variations. once you advance up would not, basically at the same time as the regulation says you have to be a very responsible human being does. It replaced into 18 years, that's nevertheless used for most stuff, yet is presently 21. So, through 21 you should comprehend the thanks to be responsible - for something and each thing you do.

Interesting point. Probably due to the fact that bikes are just inherently much more dangerous in inexperienced hands than cars are. The cost of insurance for a high powered car tends to keep most young drivers out of them aside from the ones whose wealthy parents are idiots...

They restrict new bike riders to give the new car drivers a fairer chance to mow them down. I think they should restrict car drivers like they did in Northern Ireland where they did a probationary year with limited passengers and 50mph limit. Well something like that.

its a question of statistics .
If they prove that you are more likely to be a casualty at a certain age on 2 wheels rather than 4 then you are likely to be a candidate for restrictive legislation
Unfortunately we have a primeminister that has a fondness for panderring to focus groups in order to ssecure votes at any cost.
So if a family was bereaved due to a motorcycle accident , and campaigned for restriction then there is a good chance that the statistics will be examined and regulation amended
