If it is the power supply. How much should that cost to replace?

Better question: are the new computers better than the one you have? When my system gets foolish, I put up with it for a few minutes and then I actually slap the top of the tower with the flat of my hand. I come down on the top of the tower like you would if you were swatting a house fly. Wham! The computer then says, "Oh, sorry. You actually wanted me to do something? Okay. Sorry, I was taking a nap...." You have not stated what OPS you are running, but during the first few minutes when your computer is "coming up," when you see those three little blue squares chasing themselves from left to right (Windows XP Professional), that's exactly when you tap F8 a few times. That will hopefully get you into "safe mode" where you can try a number of things like getting free of a load of cookies, temporary files, word documents that are ancient, and even programs you no longer use. I would have you go to Settings from your Start button and then to Control Panel and then to Add/Remove and when that populates, scroll down slowly through all those names of programs running on your computer and see if you can spopt some old programs you just never use anymore. Removing those will definitely speed up your computer. Talk about baggage! After I remove any programs, I usually run CCleaner (check it out; it is a free download, and a really good one - five stars: ***** ) and select Registry Tools, run it, and when it pulls up the Uninstaller items, I make a backup file and then tell it to kiss them good-bye. You might even try using System Restore and set our computer back a few hundred years and see if that helps. In other words, you can do some housecleaning. If all this is a bit rad, (radical) then be extremely patient and just let it slog its way to full operative status and then do the housecleaning in your normal operating mode. Totally confused, right - ?

check all the obvious first....power cable, and others firmly in place? If there is no sound at all, you may need to replace your power supply inside the computer. UPDATE: a new power supply for a typical computer is around 30 40 bucks. When replacing, be sure to make a note of exactly what connections go where.

well, it almost sounds to me to be a power supply problem. I had one system that I would have to unplug the cord from it, take a screw driver and ground out the pins on the back of the supply and at the same time hit the power button to sort of "drain" the power out of it. now I would not suggest doing this if you dont know anything about the internals of a computer, but i would say it is power supply related...

might also be able to use the bios grounding pin, and clear the cmos. each board is different, but that jumper is always close to the battery inside on the motherboard.

good luck

First, the obvious...is it plugged in, power strip on, electric to the plug? If that works, try switching the power cord with the one on your monitor if you don't have an extra power cord. If the machine still doesn't power up, chances are it is the power supply in your machine that isn't working. This can be replaced.

It is most likely the power supply. Is there a rocker switch on the back of the computer. Make sure it's on. Most new one's cost a bought $60.00 on average. Depends on where you buy them Circuit City, Staples, Radio Shack . You can get a new one from HP, but it will be expensive.
Sometimes you can find new one's on eBay.

Sounds like the power supply is fried. If you don't get any lights or anything (there will be at least a light on the motherboard) I'd check the power supply.

Try checking the switch on the back of the power supply, something may have hit it and shut it off.

Try the most obvious - the outlet is dead, the power cable is not really plugged in, the power switch is broke, the power supply is dead. But there is also the motherboard - it might be fried. It is probably the motherboard - dead.

In your case it sound like it can be one of three things. The outlet has no power, the power supply in the computer has died, or the power on switch is dead.

Hi Brad,
If you could provide more info it will be better...From the description No Beep, nothing, it seems there is problem in power cable or power socket.
1. Try to change your power cable. (first check if there is problem in socket, if not check if wire is not broken, maybe internally)..
please let me know if it works..
