My mothers car is a Mercury Sable (I forget what year it is...96 perhaps...) and sometimes when she is driving it it will randomly start jerking and the speedometer bottoms out to zero or starts fluctuating really odd. However, when she takes it to the mechanic, it never acts up for him, so he cannot tell her what is wrong...does anybody have any idea?

Anybody who says fuel filter or pump is an idiot. They don't affect the speedometer. It's electrical. One common and easy thing to check is the ground wire between the engine and the frame. The battery and alternator ground to the engine, while everything else grounds to the frame, so if the ground between the two is bad your electrical system will go bananas.

I would suggest looking into the fuel filter or fuel pump. There may also be trash in the tank clogging the fuel sending unit. Also check for water in the tank. Cheapest and pretty simple to start the list off with.

It sounds like an electrical problem. I say that because the speedo keeps shorting out. If it was your fuel system, it would be continuous.

its a ford and its electrical. i am "guessing" that you most likely have either an ignition module going bad or the PCM (vehicle computor) or both..................or more......................... tell mom to wash her hands of it because intermintant problems like this can get exspensive, especially with fords. if you take it to a mechanic make sure he has a break-out box because this is the only way to test it correctly and this is if he can duplicate the problem
