control panel, system, advanced, performance options, leave application response set on application, virtual memory click on change, you want to set it at one and a half times whatever the amount of ram memory sticks you have installed!!! set it to that in both boxes (initial and maximum size and click on set ,so if you are like me having 1024mb of ram memory you would set it at 1536 dont go by what it recomends. Then restart the computer so it will change it!!!

disk thrashing is when the files on the hardrive are so fragmented or spread out the magnetic arms on the hardrive thrash back and forth looking to find the files. You stop this by doing a defrag!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

definition of virtual memory from 2006 computer repair and upgrade manuel---- the space on one or more of the computer's hard disks used by Windows as if it were RAM. This space on the hard disk is known as the paging file (a special file on one or more of the hard disks of a computer running Windows uses virtual memory to store some of the program code and other information in RAM and to temporarily store the program code and other information on the computers hard disks. This increases the amount of available memory on the computer) The benefit of virtual memory is being able to run more applications at one time than would be possible by using just the RAM (physical memory) on the computer.

Ok here are the steps in which to do so for a standard Windows OS (95-XP including NT)

1. Right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Performance tab.
3. Click Virtual Memory, and then click Let me specify my own virtual memory settings.
4. Click the hard disk that you want to use for virtual memory, and then select the minimum and maximum amounts of virtual memory.
5. Click OK, click OK, and then restart your computer.

Here is how:

Optimize the size of the paging file. As a rule, the size of the paging file should be 1.5x the amount of RAM. If you have 256 MB or less of RAM then set the size to 384 MB. If you have 512 MB or more of RAM then set the size to 512MB. If you have 1 GB or more of RAM then set the size to 768 MB. Some computer experts suggest if you have 1 GB or more of RAM then you can try setting the size to 0 (i.e. don’t use a paging file at all). Follow these steps to change the size of the paging file.

Use an account with administrative privileges.
*

Right click My Computer > Properties > Advanced > under “Performance,” click [Settings] > choose the “Advanced” tab > under “Virtual Memory,” click [Change].
*

Choose “Custom size” and set the “Initial size” and “Maximum size” to the same value.
*

Click [Set] > [O.K.]. Reboot.

V-RAM if you still cant get it to make a differance then install more RAM .. The hard drive light is staying on for moste of the time. This is what they call disk thrashing.. When ever you run low on resorcess then the V- RAM will take its place..Take care and God bless....
