They work side by side. The heart is a muscular pump, it helps bring nutrients into cells, fluids are transported by diffusion from blood vessels into the interstitial compartment and cells. The heart has 4 chambers, and the muscular action consists of contractions and relaxations in a very specific manner. Oxygenated blood leaves the heart then goes through arteries then arterioles, to precapillaries and then capillaries. oxygen and nutrients are eleased and the venous capillaries absorb carbon dioxide and waste. Blood regulates body fluid volume and temperatures. Plasma is a liquid consisting of 90% water with the rest being proteins, hormones, and other materials. The lymph system provides one way for blood to leave the heart and arterial system and 2 ways to return through the venous paths and the lymphatic paths. The lymph system is actually a 2nd pathway back to the heart. Lymph is a fluid which originates in connective tissue spaces of the body. If the lymph system did not recover the protein rich fluid you would die in 24-48 hours.
