ughhh, well, you can't exactly "stay away", exactly, because they're everywhere, but you can do your best to avoid them when you see them.
and also, spiders are way more scared of you than you are of them.
so, generally, THEY'LL stay away from you.

Define big? Anyway, regular house cleaning will keep them away. Vacuum regularly. Also when you see a spider indoors, don't reach for the Raid, tho that is easy!, reach for the vacuum. It you are creeped out about sucking them up, finish the job with a small squirt up the vacuum hose at the end. Small squirt is more than enough.
Outside, once again, keep the walks and house sides swept. In the plants, please leave the spiders. Those beautiful orb spiders with the mega webs are eating hundred of bad bugs (and some good one too, they aren't particular. )

spiders go where people do not go. so stay in your territory and keep your eyes open. avoid attics, cellars, dark places. do not disturb old rocks of trash or stuff. avoid log piles.
