I agree with some of your other answerers, we're not a laughingstock. Other countries are alarmed, and probably quite disgusted and disappointed as well, but they're not laughing.
The first step to returning to respectability probably won't ever happen, but it should. Our leaders need to 'reach out'--issue a statement, or meet individually with other heads of state--and tell the world that we are going to make things right. Ask for help to resolve Iraq. Display a little humility, instead of barrelling on down the same old arrogant path we've been on. Give the world a reason to believe we understand our own culpability in our current mess, and how big an impact it has had on our allies.
Then, we need to clean house. Investigate ourselves. Bring the light of open scrutiny into the decisions this administration has made, and the actions that are questionable. If there were laws broken, we need to show the world that we won't accept that from our leaders. Then, and only then, in my opinion, can we make any claims to integrity.

You're not correct in your assessment. America is not a laughingstock--we're not perceived as the joke, we're perceived as imperialists. That's no laughing matter if you are Iran, or Pakistan. Having elections every four years makes America seem bi-polar. One year we're amiable, and give foreign aid to every country in need, the next year we bomb Baghdad for a few days then tear up the locals with machine-guns. Make no mistake about it, though, radical Muslims want to see you dead. They delight at the thought of turning your body into a corpse and throwing it into a victory pyre--just think about that. I'm by no means supporting war, but if not war we have to have a better idea. Don't just shrug and hope the problem will go away, it won't.

Not everyone shares the belief that George Walker Bush has turned the United States into the laughing stock of the world. Not everyone shares the belief that the United States has made any departure from repectability, therefore not everyone would have an answer as to how to return to respectability.

1.Most of the world disliked us before he was elected, and they will still dislike us after he is gone. The constant trashing of the presidency and the country in general by the liberal leftist has done far more damage than George Bush ever could.
2. I don't really give a crap what the losers in the world media think of us anyway.
3. Look at the numbers of people that want to come *here* as oppose to *anywhere* else and you will see what the *real* world opinion in fact is.

To use the words of gwb, "Mission Accomplished". The elections that took the house and senate away from the republicans is the beginning of our return to respectability. Other governments also have received the message the U.S. voters have delivered to their leaders.
Now what must happen is that the newly elected leaders must listen to the people and act on their desires. If this happens America can be returned to respectability.

You really feelgood about yourself right now?
I don't see us as a laughingstock.
I don't see Bush as anything but a great leader.
You may have a different opinion, but you're free to have it because of strong leaders.
Try expressing an alternate opinion in Iran.

He hasn't really made you a laughing stock, and to the numbskull above, the rest of us don'e fear you and we give respect where it's due so don't be such a philastine.
You americans have a very good thing going on with your country but you really do need to get out more and see what the rest of us are all about.

Bush's message to the world is crystal clear:
If you intend to fly an airplane into a building, better to do it in Spain or France and stay the hell out of the United States.

I say, make real an effort to involve "the world" since "the world" is already involved. Invite those chaps at the "United Nations" to participate. I was always an advocate of working with other nations. Certainly the French did us a great deal of good at our inception.
You haven't forgotten their aid have you, my fine friends of the right wing? Always seek our friends overseas. Building a strong friendship with them has served our interest well over the years.
