My Volvo 740GLE (1990) has a brake light problem. I tried changing the bulb until I realize the brake lights work fine when the headlight is turned on (night time) but it won't work during the day when the headlight is not on. The problem is only on one side too. The center brake light works fine both day and night. Is there a different fuse for day and night? I just don't get it. Thanks in advance for any help!

sounds like you have a wiring ground problem on that side, check the connections and also the way the bulb is installed in the socket, could be turned 180 degrees

this sounds more like a wiring problem than a fuse problem. First at the rear of the car check the ground wires to assure they are clean and connected properly.

A second thing is on most cars...on the drivers side where the bottom of the door meets the body there is a panel on the body of the car. Under this...remove the screws and you will find part of the wiring going to the rear of the car. In this wiring look for a bad wire.

One other thing to check is the blinker switch...on some of the older cars the brake lights go through the blinker switch. It takes a test light...test the power coming in to the blinker switch and the brown wire coming out of the blinker...the brake lights are the brown wire on most cars.

Hope this helps

Check the circuit board in the side with the bad tailight and brake light. Sounds like you have a bad tailight/brakelight assembly. These get problems with the boards and cause all sorts of things like this. You have electricity going to it all the time at night with the headlights and running lights going and not when they are off and the brakes could be getting a ground of juice feeding back from that. Most any car that actually has a printed circuit board in the tailight can do wierd things like this.

sounds like the bulb may be in backwards or a bad connection. check the wiring, especially the contact points between the bulb and the socket. and there are no seperate fused for the lights. you have a fuse for the taillights and for the brakes, each set runs on one fuse.

The ground for the brake light fixture is missing. When you turn the tail lights on, you create a current path for the brake lights, so they work then.
