Your questions are actually related. Snakes, like all reptiles, have an opening called a cloaca (from the Latin word for "sewer"), at the end of their abdomen, right before the tail. (Yes, snakes have tails, separate from the rest of their bodies.)
Male snakes have two reproductive organs, called hemipenes, which they can extend, or evert, out of their cloaca to either side, right or left. (They're called hemipenes -- from the Latin words for half-penis -- because each hemipenis is a V-shaped channel, open at the top, through which the snake's semen is delivered.)
To mate, a male snake and a female snake coil up together; the male everts one of his hemipenes into the female's cloaca. He deposits his semen inside the female and fertilizes her eggs.
(Virtually all other reptiles, including crocodiles and lizards, mate the same way; the hemipenes simplify access around the female's tail, especially for crocodilians.)
There are a few interesting variations. For example, some snakes (the common North American garter snake, for example) have a kind of orgy, in which they form a cluster called a mating ball. Several hundred snakes can join together in these mating balls, which occur in early spring after these snakes leave their semi-hibernation, or torpor, in which they spend the coldest parts of the winter.
Once fertilized, most snakes lay eggs. However, rattlesnakes and boas give birth to live young. Baby rattlesnakes are fully formed at birth, with fangs and venom glands, and can bite and envenomate prey as soon as they're born.
The information on how snakes (and more than forty other animals) mate is from a book called "How They Do It," by Robert Wallace. I've included a link to it in the Sources field. Rabbits, bedbugs, elephants, pigs, snakes, porcupines: it's a wealth of fascinating information on our four-legged friends -- and those with six, eight, and even zero legs.
