I'm writing a paper on fairy tales. I'm just wondering what is everyone's definition of a fairy tale.

A fairy tale is one made of urban legends from our childhood. By that I mean it is a story half of fantasy and half of serious interest for a child. It has to be serious to keep a child interested, ie: trolls under a bridge, snow white eating an apple, yet still easy enough so the child being told the fairy tale feels comfortable enough to sleep and not be worried for the characters. ie: troll is banished, Snow White wakes up, Cinderella gets the guy.

Yep, in fact i think of it replaced into the Brothers Grimm who collaborated in a chain of marvellous fairy memories that have persisted by way of the years, and that i'm hoping will final perpetually LOL. Grimm did no longer write all the fairy memories accessible, yet a great style of them, and that's the reason those are talked approximately as Grimm's Fairy memories. Get a e book of them and luxuriate in. you're by no potential too previous.

A "fairy-story" is one which touches on or uses Faërie, whatever its own main purpose may be: satire, adventure, morality, fantasy. Faërie itself may perhaps most nearly be translated by Magic - but it is magic of a peculiar mood and power, at the furthest pole from the vulgar devices of the laborious, scientific, magician. There is one proviso: if there is any satire present in the tale, one thing must not be made fun of, the magic itself. That must in that story be taken seriously, neither laughed at nor explained away."
