I swear I am. My therapist says that it is highly improbable and doesn't think that I am an exception to the norm, but I do. I have all the signs as far as I can tell, but I perform well in school. He makes it seem that that just could not happen. I try to tell him that just because I get good grades, does not mean that I don't have to work really really hard to do so.

That I don't have to re-read things over and over. That I have a ton of trouble getting to enough sleep because I can't think clearly enough to focus on a project. I feel like what I need to be treated for is ADD.

During most of high school - my grades were very low, almost failing many times failing. One year I used Ritalin recreationally and often, and I recognized then that it helps me focus and retain info. Now that I am in college, I wish I could have it again. I'm sure it would help.

Dude - first of all, ritalin has exactly the opposite effect on teens and adults that it does on children. It's speed! If you really want to take a drug recreationally that'll help you focus on one thing at a time (why you want to do that is beond me), then try marijuana, it definetly helps you coincentrate on onething at a time.

Try to embrace the things that make you, you and work them to your advantage. When theydescribe someone who is ADD or ADHD they actually describing people who are smarter than average, even to the point of genius. They consider smart stdents a big problem in public schools.

I've worked my ADD to my benefit, I can do several things at once and have many projects going at the same time, when others get flustered and want to do one thing untill it's done and then move on to the next. Unfortunetly for them, this isn't the way the world works. Imagine a Caveman trying to do one thing at a time until it's finished. (Nope sorry, can't worry about that saber-tooth tiger stalking me right now, I'm making arrowheads . . . )

Embracing this talent of mine made me excel as a Chef (yup, being a Chef or any other admin type requires you to be able to manage multiple projects at one time, the ones that can handle more projects do better), for about 20 years and now I own my own business (texxsmith.com - non-restaurant). And those losers said I needed to sit still and be quiet!

And one more thing - NEVER -EVER trust your doctor!

ADD is a disease that does NOT exist and the condition is nothing more than the result of kids living in a world where they are not encouraged to exercise and utilize their imagination. When they were raised in front of the TV with music videos, video games, and technological cartoons, their deep desire to imagine things was suppressed. Therefore what doctors call ADD is nothing more than an outburst of suppressed imagination.

Yes, some kids are given caffine and sugar to counteract ADD, the ones I know of are given a Mt Dew in the morning to keep them calm. So your therapist is right, and doctors overprescribe Ritalin to a massive degree.

Have you tried talking to your doctor about food additives that you should avoid. My partner has a son that has the same problem. We had him for 3 weeks at Christmas, we did not feed him anything that had additives or preservatives in it if we could help it, we even got him to eat wholemeal bread instead of white. The difference was amazing. I hope that this will give you another line of questioning for your doctor. Good luck

I agree with you. Medication is NOT the answer. Most medications have severe side effects....even worse then the disorder or disease itself!
If you can manage having ADD and still do well in school...then I say: Bravo!!!
I know many people with ADD that are psychiatrist's and doctors and are know as the BEST in their field.
I am so proud of you, although I don't know you, I am so proud of you. the fact that you even posted this question shows that you are taking your health, especially your mental health, seriously.
I applaud you on that.

ritlan is poor man's cocaine, one chemical different. You r wanting to fit in. I would rather face my fears and heal them than to numb out and avoid personal responsiblity. this is your life so you have freewill you make the choice. we all have trauma and all need to do our work.
