They just aren't bright eyed and bushy-tailed, that's all. Perhaps if you explained that Weasels are the alternative, they'd be more accepting of the squirellz.

Squirells are rodents to some people and your parents don't want you to get bitten by them and get rabies they're just looking out for you.

I had many animals as pets as a child., and well i still do have a lot of pets.. dont pay them any mind.just dont let them out in the house. keep them in your bedroom.
