I'll be visiting NC for the first time this December. Which are the happening places (restaurants, malls, bars, etc)? I will be staying with a friend somewhere near Winston-Salem.

old salem (in w-s): at christmas, they have their candle teas, which are really neat. and the bakery sells wonderful moravian cookies. buy some to take home with you. the walnut ones are wonderful.

secca (southeastern center of contemporary art) in w-s

hanes mall (w-s)

morrow mountain state park and town creek indian mounds (near mt. gilead)

Pilot Mountain and Mt. Airy (if you like the Andy Griffith show)

also, you won't be far from the nc blue ridge mountains, where you can get in some skiing and snowboarding. if you go to the boone/blowing rock area for your winter sports, they have an outlet mall there. my favorite is the coach outlet, but they have polo, liz clairborne, and bunches of others.

if you have time, you can also visit the beach. the outer banks are great. i prefer emerald isle, or you can go to see the cape hatteras lighthouse.

greensboro is also close to w-s. they have one of dolly madison's dresses at the greensboro historical museum. if you like furniture, check out furnitureland south on business I-85. they have great prices and deliver all over. also in greensboro they are in the process of refurbishing the old woolworth's building to creat the civil rights museum (the site of the lunch counter sit-ins).

in high point (very close to w-s) you can see the nc shakespeare festival's production of the christmas carol.

in tanglewood, (very near w-s) is the tanglewood tour of lights. it's a really neat drive-thru christmas light display.

there's bunches more, but since i live here, i take too much for granted and can't remember any more.
