Cities need leaders who have the integrity, the foresight, the intelligence and the political skills to bring about changes necessary to make our cities more sustainable. This includes such unpopular measures as limiting the amount of cars and trucks in cities, mandating laws which encourage people to share rides, like creating HOV lanes which require two or more people per vehicle, taxing vehicles in proportion to proximity to the city's economic centre, and more. Requiring vehicles to have pollution controls may not be popular in some states or communities, but it is necessary to our survival and good health.
Going after slum lords, promoting social services which help prevent spread of disease, overpopulation, these need leadership with foresight, education, and will.

Bad local or state government cost tax payers money & them votes. If a local city council does not watch where the tax money is spent then the money gets wasted & the citizens do not get services they expect or taxes have to go up. We have that problem in my area with a waterfront project. The developers want to make it commercial + condos + a littlepark . Most citizens want less commercial & condo& more park. The land is city owned. Some people think the aera is growing to fast. I agree. Also this project is mostly for the well to do people not the adverage person. All the stores & restarunts are upper price places. That is why you need good goverment to mantain good sustainabilty.
