It means your cervix has thinned by 90%... have you started to dilate? It could be any day, it could be a week or so. I have been 60% effaced for a week now, I am only 28 weeks though.

It's the thinning of the cervix. I've been 50% effaced and 1 cm dilated for over a week now.

There is no rule about when the baby will come because of that. The good news is once you go into labor you will probably dilate a bit faster then someone who isn't effaced at all, speeding up the delivery a little bit.

You can be dilated and effaced for WEEKS though, sorry hon. Hang in there, I'm in there with you hoping for this baby SOON!

Effacement is a phase of "pre" labor when your cervix (the neck/opening of your uterus) begins to "thin" out in preparation for birth.
During a normal pregnancy, your cervix "closes" (for lack of a better word) up and a plug protects any bacteria from entering your uterus.
As far as estimating when your baby will come, only time will tell. At least you know it's sometime over the next 3 to 4 weeks :)
Your body is doing what it should to prepare for labor. Hang in there

Hello,

well i am pregnant with my first so can not give you to much advice...but i do no that your cerivix starts at 0% effaced and goes to 100% effaced....once you are 100% effaced and dilated to a 10 you will deliver your baby. Sounds to me like you probably will not go to 40 weeks. I was told that effacement determines how quick things will happen better then dilation....i think it is because the more effaces you are the easier it is to dilate.... The effacement is your cervix getting thinner....i once read something that said effacement is like putting on a turtleneck sweater....If you scrunch up the neck of the sweater it is much easier to put it over your head...just like the baby comming out of your cervix...if you didnt scrunch the neck of the turtle neck it would be much harder to put on....check out the sites i listed hope this helps..>GOOD LUCK i am 38 weeks and sounds like we could both be mommies soon!!!

90% effaced means your cervix is completely thinned, and ready to dialate. It cant dialate until it is effaced. Which means now it can readily dialate and you can start labor.

Typicall you dilate a few centemeters and then have to wait until your cervix thins to dialate more. It can take weeks.

This can still take weeks, but you're on an excellent head start. IT means you have that much less work to do when labor begins :) That much less you have to labor through.

once you're 100% effaced and dialated 10cm you can push.

the word is actually efaced. and 90% means that your cervix is almost completely thinned out. This means that you are probably dialated to at least a 3 or 4 and your baby could come any day. I would see your doctor and have him/her explain it all in detail.
