Try putting "chicken wire" or something similar over the opening. This will allow ventilation but prevent birds, squirrels etc from getting in. We have done this on our garage and under the eaves of the roof of the house.

What is it - bumblebee or wasp ? Bumblebees are not aggressive, leave it alone, in fact you should be encouraging them anyway. Wasps die off at this time of year but can become very aggressive so leave your clearing up until the activity has died down. If you have wast nest, get a professional to clear it away.
