Running the fuel tank dry can kick up enough junk from the bottom of tank to clog the fuel pickup & fuel filter.
Do the easy thing first & change fuel filter
.Not sure of model years, but some GM cars had a fuel filter in line right at gas tank.
Change out the filter & if that does'nt work you may need to go after the pickup.
You may get lucky if it is only the filter .
These clogs are caused by solids in gas & may not have traveled to the injectors.
.In the meantime do not use any of the injector cleaning fuel additives .
It can loosen more junk & set you back.
There are injector refurb kits available online which might even improve performance.
Worst case is you need to have tank flushed & pickup replaced.
Good luck

you can try a new fuel filter and injector cleaner, if this doesnt do any good then the pump was probably damaged
technically the filter should trap any junk from the tank, and if it was alot then its plugged up so bad that the engine cant get enough fiuel and this also will harm the pump over time
at least try a new filter, and ASAP
but its very easy to damage the pump by running it with so low of a fuel level
good luck

You can buy fuel additive that will clean injectors. It's not a bad idea. However, small particles can collect in the bottom of a gas tank. These paritcles from the bottom could have clogged the fuel filter. If the injectors have never been cleaned and the filter hasn't been changed in a while I would do both - it certainly could not hurt.

I can tell you from personal experience that when you run out of fuel in a car with fuel injectors it's not pretty. You have probably damaged your fuel injectors. You may have stirred some of the gunk that builds up so running some cleaner through there before you tear it apart is a good idea. I use Prestone Fuel Injector Cleaner myself.

WIthout a long winded answer. 9 times out of 10, when you run out of gas, you pick up trash in the bottom of the tank, so more likely you have trash in the fuel lines. Sometimes it will clear up in time, then again, sometimes not. A good fuel treatment and cleaner to use would be Lucus fuel treatment.

check your fuel pump pressure, if memory seves me correctly, it should be right at 40 psi. should jump up to about 45 when you pull the vacuum hose off of the fuel pump pressure regulator.(engine idling) if it's been awhile since you've had the fuel filter replaced, replace it. life of a filter is 30-40k miles. i suspect you damaged the fuel pump when you ran out of gas. that is the quickest way i know of to damage a pump is to run them low/out of fuel. always keep 3/8 tank or more of fuel in the tank. this is for many reasons, but mainly to keep the pump immersed in the cool fuel, thus keeping the pump from getting hot.

It always amazes me how many people think that running out of gas causes you to suck stuff off the bottom of the gas tank. Where exactly do they think the fuel pump gets the gas from anyhow? It wouldn't work too well if it wasn't at the bottom of the tank normally. Do they think it floats or something?

Run some good fuel injector cleaner thru it and see if that helps with it, since you ran it all the way down you may have gotten some sediment in one of them.

you cant manually clean the without a cleaning kit to do it with, and it is hard on the injectors, the best thing to do,is use some good gas treatment in it,and let it clean them out,,it might help,i wont promise you it will,, but pressure cleaning them, can ruin them i know from experience on this one,,good, luck,i hope this help,s.
