We vote to choose the government that best aspires to our wishes. When elected the chosen government may not impliment the policies on which they were elected.Sometimes the elected govt.will even pass unpopular bills and claim they have a mandate to do so.This will make the govt.unpopular with the people. At the next election the electorate will decide whether to accept/reject the govt handling of the welfare of the country.
Every single person who has a right to vote,is a part of this process
Every single vote counts, and is important
Every democracy is built on the right to vote
Your freedom and liberty, are safeguarded by the right to vote
If you don't vote, you're endorsing the actions of your present govt

Technically, the benefit of voting is so your voice is heard. So you can express your own personal values and beliefs, and have a representative who is for those values. The reality however, is that your vote doesn't count. All parties are essentially owned, and aim to do the bidding of those focus groups. And if you're talking about a presidential election, well, forget it. You really don't have a voice...I guess that is the benefit of not voting. Don't waste your time, or gas money. Voting absentee - you don't have to worry about the crowds on Nov 2nd. Good luck on that class, I hated political science in hs.
