When your muscles tighten, your trachea or whatever.. basically your throat's airhole is smaller, so that possibly parts touc and thus the feeling of the lump.

That's a wonderful question. Since it probably has to do with certain physiological changes that are going on with your body while you're crying, you might want to post the question in one of the medical or science categories. Just a suggestion and I'm sorry I don't have the answer for you. You know, this would be a great question for Dr. Dean Adell on the radio. ( I may have misspelled his name.)

theres not an actual "lump" its just the feeling of throat muscles tightening.
