My estimate would be 80% going by personal experience.

By "online",I mean people who engage in what I would broadly categorise as "net-talk",i.e online communities, forums,IMs etc

To give one example that happened just tonight,I was talking to a self-proclaimed pacifist who said that she would kill my sister if it was legal, because she'd had an abortion...

I think people are braver because they know that there is nothing that can be done to them if they say something extreme or shocking - they can offend and not suffer any consequences - Im sure that about 80% of people are weird when they are online but are probably alot different in person (probably as they know they can't get away with it so easily)

I actually find it quite scary and Im sorry you experienced that - I hate it when people think that THEIR opinion is right!! I have my own views and opinions on things, however, if someone does not agree with them then thats fine - thats goods, thats diversity for you.

I personally don't like the use of real fur in coats, I hate to think of any animal suffering for fashion, however, if (for example) my best mate chooses to wear fur, then thats down to her, I wouldnt stop talking to her or hate her because her view was different to mine - I have to respect that although I think I am right, my friend also thinks that she is right!!! Some people are totally oblivious to the fact that their views and opinions are NOT the law.

The woman you spoke to tonight is clearly thick as s**t, after all, if she is so against the 'killing of' (what she obviously considers) a 'human life' or 'living soul' etc etc, then how come she would be happy to KILL someone and commit the same "crime" (as she would see it) as your sister!!!!!!!!!!! Isnt that just contradiciton at its finest!!!!!

Depends what you look at. The internet is a haven for the weird, it satisfies all interests and protects the physical person from actual harm.

Judging from this site, there are a good many weirdos out there, but I think most of them are 'trying'.

Unless these weirdos hide away all day and night i'd say that the same percentage are weird on here that you meet in real life, they are the same people. One ust not separate the physical reality of the human race from the digital world... at least not yet. However, behaviour is less moderated online, so does that mean that they are hiding a weird side, or does the internet MAKE them weird?

60% by the way...

The anonymity that internet provides attracts weirdos like the light does with insects.
And the same anonymity makes other people, who in real life behave "normal", let go of all their inhibitions, restraints or manners. So a lot of more normal people behave "strangely" on the Net.
Then , the percentage is really high (60-70%, I would say) on some pages. But on many others it's simply just a lot of lonely or bored people

I would agree with you, alot of people use the internet as a way of making new friends which is great, however what is not great is when you get random IM's from people saying

"Is my penis too small, I am 5 inches"

"Will you be my friend, My family were all brutally murdered on Christmas day and I feel alone!"

I mean come on!! I think ISP should do a psycho test
before allowing these people to have direct debit mandates! xx

The hard fact is there are truly a lot real weird folks out there. No question about it.
Then again, the world wouldn't be this beautiful if it is all uniformly the same.
They all have their place, but, make sure you do everything to ensuure your own happiness.

It can range anywhere from 90%-10%....
Depending on the sites you go on.

For example, a site like NEOPETZZ!!!!111! is probably 90%.
While, this site(Yahoo Answers) is probably 45%-50%.

I really can't judge on such a big scale like the WHOLE ONLINE WORLD.

They are not gonna come out and tell you that they are weird! The ones who have an idea that they might be slightly odd wont answer this Q, or maybe they will but pretend to be normal... Mwaaahahahahahahaha I can see you...
