You can go to Walmart and buy a cheap new door handle with a good lock.

If you just don't want anyone going in while you are in there, you can go to home depot and buy a simple lock that bolts the door closed while you are in there.

Kelly, the easiest way is to replace the door knob with one that has a key (called an entrance set). It only takes a screwdriver and 15 minutes.
For the fastest replacement, look at the part of the lock that protrudes through the edge of the door. It will usually have the brand name. If you get the same brand, you may not have to change that part, and the striker(the part on the frame).
Follow the section of the instructions where it tells you how to remove the old knob. It should be a matter of removing just 2 screws. The new one, if it's the same brand, should mesh into the old works. Replace the screws and, privacy is yours.
Important, give the extra key to someone you trust, in case access to your room is needed. You could be locked in there and need help.
Hope this helps you. Charley

The easiest solution is to simply buy a new doorknob that does not allow entry without a key. You can buy epoxy plumber's putty which will guarantee no one can use a toothpick to open it. Unfortunately, if you accidentally lock yourself out of the room the only way you can regain entry is by dismantling the door which will be far more expensive than buying a key entry doorknob. You may also want to consider a slidelock (less than $5) or a simple hook and eye system (like $2 already). Just remember that by locking yourself into the room, if an emergency occurs no one will be able to come to your assistance without breaking the door down.

The best thing to do is change the knob to a key lock, but the other option would be to put a wedge or door stop under the door. Try looking at your local home center for them - they are normally used to keep a door open.
