Well we don't have anything quite as funny as the Spice Girls, or the Royal Family, but I suggest that you look a bit further than the norm. The UK and other countries buy and broadcast some of the lamest and tamest shows from the US in package deals from the studios. You are missing out on the actually funny stuff.
So "40 year old virgin wasn't funny"? How about "Office Space", "Being John Malkovitch" "Bottle Rocket" "The whole 9 yards" "Rushmore", "The Royal Tennebaums", "Swingers", "Galaxy Quest" "The Incredibles"? (movies)
SouthPark? Curb your Enthusiasm? Cheers?Sunny in Philadelphia? Futurama? Adult Swim? The Larry Sanders Show? The Colbert Report? The Simpsons? My name is Earl? Andy Richter Controls the Universe? Arrested Development? Reno 911? The Dave Chappel Show? The Daily Show? (TV series).....there are any number of funny people making comedy of various sorts. You just need to actually look.
The British comedies that I like usually tend to be hard to find in America, but I don't call the entire UK "unfunny" just because some of your shows are lame. Crap big buget comedies are the scourge of the entertainment industry everywhere - because they are easy to make, and unfunny people make them. I have no idea who goes to those Adam Sandler and Jim Carey movies, but no one thinks that they are funny. Some people are just funny. If they would let the funny people just do what they're best at, we would all be happy. It isn't a nationality thing. Most of my current faves are British I'll admit, but I still watch American comedy too.

Oh, I like Scrubs, futurama and Malcolm in the Middle, but in general I have to agree with you.
"And we Brits have little to be proud of..."my hero" etc etc etc"
I'll give you, the comedy the BBC keeps putting out is increasingly crap (mainly because the BBC seem to have no idea what's funny), but there are still a few good comedies around. Then, going back a few years, you have Only Fools and Horses, Blackadder, Red Dwarf, Porridge, etc, etc; all of which are legendary and better than any US comedy.

I bet you love QI and Have I got news for you. All that clever banter and play with words is superb-and British.
But now and then you ought to watch something that is not terribly intelligent but lets you forget about the worlds troubles for a while.
Just laugh at something daft it's good for you
Try Two and a half men (American but not bad)
(Sorry yes I like Scrubs and Alley McBeal)

American network television is not the best place to look for American comedy. Its watered down and mass produced - laced with commercial breaks.
You have to go to better sources - like cable television. I think there are some one hour comedy specials on Home Box Office that you would like.

True, lots of American comedies suck, but there's plenty that's actually funny. Like, Friends or Will and Grace.

Whoa boy! American comedy is the best. Don't expect to come on here and talk your garbage. I will be the one to take you out. To the dumpster. Better yet. To the ocean. Be nice. And learn!

i agree American comedy is bad, its because they are thick and dumb and like canned laughter to promt them to laugh. take Jim Carey in all his films all he does is flash his teeth. friends is utter drivel, and the rest should not be aired at all

It's all in your face and not tongue in cheek. British comedy is much better.
I'm an American and I hate American comedy....

Because we lack the depth of Benny Hill! Actually, the Brits should spend less time critiquing American humor and more time visiting the dentist!

I couldn't agree more with you.
American comedy makes me laugh, alright, but only because it's
terribly bad.
