Personally, I would say Salman Rushdie. Not my favourite, but can write like no one else I've ever come across. Amazing.

hk2kds - yep, John Irving is one of my favourite authors too. Brilliant.

And WHO gave me a thumbs down. What the hell's wrong with this question?

Margaret Atwood. She introduced ultra feminist views in her novel 'The Edible Woman' before they really exploded into the world arena. Her novels capture the essence of certain aspects of female existence and apart from that, are a bloody good read. If you haven't read anything by her - give her a try!

John Irving

No other author creates characters that I "see" long after reading the book. He is one of the few authors that has made me laugh and cry. Except for a little wrestling, you never know what you are going get or where his novels are going to go. I am all caught up on his fiction books - I think he was one non-fiction book I haven't read. I can't wait to read them all again even though it will be the 3rd or 4th reading of some of his best.

Well Donna I always tell everyone proudly I have never read a book, so this is a hard question for me to answer.
Actually I only know 2 authors, Shakey and Dickens, both I believe are dead.
I did hear Jordan wrote a fabulous Autobiography, so I believe it could be her.

It is difficult to define between greatest and favorite. Most seem to pick their favorites. Quite different from greatest.
Greatest does not mean selling the most or on the No. 1 lists frequently.
Since I can't judge greatest, I would say my favorite is probably Anne Rice, although she has created some dogs too.
