If you cannot do a system restore you may need to to do a full restore back to factory settings.

You can only use the saved restore points. You can clck on the left arrow under the calender to look at the previous month, but if those restore points are gone due to disk space, you're out of luck (unless you made a separate backup on tape, DVD or an external drive....)

I had a very dirty computer, full of virus, spam, trojonware, you name it I got it and I tried and tried to restore back and I could only go back two moves. My machine was just so overloaded with spy ware I had no show. I did a clean format, the machine was no damn good the way it was, reinstalled XP Home and everything went okay. Take it from someone who has been caught watch out for viruses.

If it does not display restore points beyond two days ago, I know of no way to change that. It is likely that your restore points were erased somehow. If you are having major problems, it wouldn't surprise me if you have a virus or other malware that erased them for you. I must admit to not having seen one do that before, but it was only a matter of time until someone thought to do that.

Run your antivirus and malware scans in Safe Mode (F8 during bootup to get the menu) to see if you can get rid of the culprit.
