the only bleeding you will get is from your bottom, due to piles, the best thing is not to strain.your midwife can prescribe lactulose, which worked well for me,considering i was on iron tablets as well.also you could try eating weetabix, prunes, fresh fruit and veg,and drinking pure orange juice.good luck,i know how uncomfortable it is,but the worst thing to do is to strain.you'll end up suffering more in the future.(ie piles)etc.

By all means, try a high-fiber diet before you try anything else. That is what most doctors will recommend.
If that doesn't work for you (which if you're particularly backed up, it may not), ask your OB about Milk Of Magnesia. My OB said that it was okay, and that it wouldn't hurt. It's a good thing, because it is the ONLY thing that works for me.
As far as straining, the only thing you'll get is hemorrhoids, which really suck worse than the constipation.
Talk to your OB about your options, but Milk Of Magnesia works great (do not take more than 2 tbsp, or else you'll get diarrhea).

WATER, WATER , WATER, lots of it!! I am 7.5 months pregnant and I have not been constipated during my pregnancy. I drink 80oz of water a day. Some women will tell you that the vitamins is what constipates you BUT the label in my prenatal vitamin say take one tablet a day with LOTS OF WATER, and I do and I have not been constipated at all. If you do push a lot yes you will bleed, you will also get hemorrhoids however you won't hurt the baby.

Try taking a stool softener like docusate sodium. It's not absorbed by your body at all and is harmless. It's a lubricant that will help the feces move easily through your bowels. You can pick it up anywhere.
As far as straining to have a bowel movement, unless you are at the end of your pregnancy, I don't think it will harm the baby. Nature has designed the uterus to protect the baby quite well. But if you are concerned, consult your obstetrician.
All the best to you.

Fiber.
The constipation may be from the Iron in your prenatal vitamin. If you think this is the reason, maybe only take your prenatal vit every other day and take a regular multi without iron the other days.
Also Papaya tablets help with digestion, you can get these at health food stores.

Hemorrhoids are associated with constipation and straining at bowel movements. How to get rid of hemorrhoids https://tr.im/qSBfJ
Pregnancy is also associated with hemorrhoids. These conditions lead to increased pressure within the hemorrhoidal veins that causes them to swell. Other conditions, for example chronic liver disease, may also cause increased venous pressure and may be associated with hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are very common and are estimated to occur in up to one-half of the population by age 50.

You could start bleeding from hemorrhoids if you pushed too hard. But it wouldn't hurt the baby.
Metamucil is safe during pregnancy.

Eat lots of natural fiber,or drink prune juice as the person before me mentioned. Also, drink water, water, water! Yes, you will pee more, but it will help you got the other way too!
Take it easy on things like broccoli or beans that give you gas...you don't need that kind of pain while being pregnant.
Also, check with your doc before using anything over the counter, such as Benefiber.

One thing that worked for me was soaking in a warm tub. I no that sounds kind of silly or wierd...but i think it just relaxes your muscles or something and therefore makes it easier for you to make bowel movements.
Also, i do not believe straining can harm your baby howvere, it can cause hemmroids which are common in pregnancy...and hemmroids can cause you to bleed from you backend....its not dangerous...but can be uncomfortable!!
Good Luck
