Make it something that's easy to answer and won't upset anyone. Stay away from politics, ethnicity, weight, etc....

Did you want a numerical value to use the normal or a yes/no to use the binomial?

For a numerical height is pretty good. You could ask about books read, newspapers. Consumption, etc

What makes height good is that most people will answer and you'll get a reasonable spread of answers.

Also, look at the type of examples that your text used.

If you are wanting to sample a sufficient quantity to calculate valid statistics, here are some simple questions:

How tall are you?
What is your ethnicity? Hispanic, Asian, African American, etc.
limit choices to the above.
What is your age? What is your weight? Limit to weight ranges.

You can then calculate stats assuming independent variables (ie that height is NOT dependent on ethnicity). Then you can calculate stats assuming some dependency (ie is height a function of age, ethnicity).

What your eye color? Do you have droppy earlobes?
