I have a cable modem and it used to shut down when i shut the computer off but now it stays on all the time and was wondering if theres a setting somewhere i have to adjust to have it shut off.

Actually, the normal behavior of a cable modem is to always stay on even if the computer turns off. There is no reason to turn off the cable modem when you turn off the computer.

Svancouw has it right. However if for some reason you have a dropped modem connection, you want to unplug it (the power cord, not the Ethernet or USB cable coming from the modem), leave it off for about 10-20 seconds, the put the power cord back in. It's easier if you disconnect the power plug from the back of the modem and not the wall or power outlet.
