Nope. At least, not in my mind.
Alternative rock- not exactly a genre so much as the opposite of pop-rock. Whatever ISN'T mainstream at any given time.
Punk rock- a specific genre of music that generally had a lot to do with going against the mainstream, but was also based in a specific musical style (very simple- a bunch of chords thrown together, basically).
So, punk is (or was, depending on your feelings on the whole is-punk-dead debate) alternative rock, but alternative rock isn't always punk.

Punk rock is not the same as alternative rock. In the 80's, punk rock was used to describe "youthful aggression", whether it had to do with one's political views or even clothing. Alternative rock was used to describe music that was punk influenced, but not considered mainstream at the time because alternative albums were usually recorded under independent labels.

Punk originated in the UK in the early 70's. Bands like the MC5, The Sex Pistols. Working class kids pissed off at the establishment. Later in the US these bands influenced bands like The New York Dolls, The Pretenders, and to some extent Blondie. Alternative didn't emerge until 1991. Nirvana, Soundgarden,Pearl Jam and their Seattle ilk offered an "alternative" to Hair Metal bands of the late 80's.

And for the chick who said Fall Out Boy, they aren't ******** punk! They're the farthest thing from punk! If you want some examples of real punk try The Sex Pistols. As for alternitive...the best I can come up with is My Chemical Romance
