You'll find it's mostly Americans who can't spell. Our educational system has gone down the crapper. As far as that goes our society as a whole is quickly turning into mush. It's a scary thought that these people will someday be running our country. Both the parents and the teachers simply don't care enough to make sure our kids learn how to do anything. I think the spelling talents are just the tip of the iceberg. It's just the most obvious.
The parents don't care. So the kids don't care. They say things like, "why do I need to know how to spell?" "You knew what I meant!". "It's never bothered me, why should it bother you?". It's not only pitiful but it's sad. America, the land of the free blithering idiots.

It's definitely going down. Lots of suspects, and more than one probably apply.

Poor education or change in educational methods emphasising ideas rather than the ability to communicate them with precision.
More people encountered on-line who do not have English as a first language (though many of these are horrified at the mangling of the language by native English speakers!)
Overconfidence in spell-checkers, which do not generally correct punctuation and which consider loose and lose, collage and college, good words irrespective of context.
Sheer laziness.

Significantly bad spelling and grammar is the equivalent of verbal mumbling or slurred speech. Some, perhaps, really can't help it. In others it is simply bad manners.

"I am not a grammar Nazi, I am a grammar Rommel. I did not start the war but I will fight on the side of the forces of grammar. If, however, they become too tyrannical I may turn on them."

I believe spelling, sentence structure, grammar and punctuation have always been a problem for a lot of people; unfortunately those people now have access to a computer and an Internet connection, where the also display poor typing skills.

AutoCorrect in many computer applications eliminates the need for people to correct their mistakes in word processing. Also, at least at my school, points can't be taken off for spelling errors.

What happened is our parents got in too much of a hurry catching-up with the Joneses to interest our kids in reading.
And our schools got overburdened with students (Joneses) and under-funded. Failed education experiments compounded the problem, too.

Texting in; phonics out. I'm just be happy that they will have to live with them. I'll be dead when it gets really bad.

I don't believe that it has any thing to do with their ability. I believe that it is laziness.
