For a song to catch me it has to have both lyrics and beat. Lyrically it has to have a point and the beat has to be steady and not all over the place.
I like emo/alternative/punk music, it's what fits me

Everyone listens to music differently. You can take the same song and hear it differently. I listen for lyrics and vocal melodies. Part of that is because I work more with words and part of that is because I have to listen for specific words in a song which means I can't play it on the radio. I also love the artistry of language and the feelings it can provoke. A friend of mine plays bass, so he listens to the rhythm of the song. Another friend hears the guitar riffs over anything else in a song. That doesn't mean I can't tell you if a song has slowed down or sped up. Or the bass guy can't tell you that a certain riff sounded good. Or the guitar guy can't tell you if a lyric sounded off, or in the case of a cover band if they had the wrong lyrics. We just all connect to songs differently because of our preferences and backgrounds. A truly good song to me has all of that. There's a great rhythm behind it. The instrumentation fits, is well done and interesting. And the lyrics are thought provoking or paint a picture or create an emotion. And each part compliments the other parts instead or detracting or overpowering.

Song lyrics are very important. You should focus on the lyrics instead of the tune.

Im all about the lyrics. A good tune is important too. The lyrics are the key though. That saying, "Music is the soundtrack of your life" is so true. Listen to Colin Hay, "I just dont think I'll ever get over you". That is poetry.

Actually i like the tune or the rhythm in a song because i love to dance-- the lyrics are secondary.--btw-- if the tune is great people will listen --if not-- no one will ever hear the words anyway

The beat of the song matters to me more than the lyrics...I have liked some songs with some pretty dumb lyrics but if I like the beat, then often, I like hte song.

It depends what I feel like listening to. Lyrics are great, especially if they tell a story, but sometimes it's nice to just let your soul flow with the music and the lyrics are not even heard.

i think that the lyrics are the most important part because if they are good, you will be able to relate to them. If you can relate to them, they will make you feel good, sad, happy, mad, etc. That's why i listen to music, so it can make me feel happy when i'm sad, or make me think of good times i've had in the past.
