The monotremes (platypus and echidna) have an extensive fossil record indicatng they were more widespread in the past. Now they only exist in the relative isolation of New Guinea and Australia.

The platypus is well adapted to its environment, possessing venom and electrolocation sense. Although not as well developed as in marsupials and placental mammals, it's warm blooded status lets it survive in waters to cold for crocodiles.

No, seriously, with the landmass of Australia separating itself at an early time geologically speaking, evolution was able to follow pathways that would have been impossible elsewhere. The lack of natural predators make possible, for instance the kangaroo, which gives birth to ridiculously embryo-like offspring, as well as the slow moving and dietary restricted koala. All these would be inconceivable without their isolation.

Species develop by the ecological niches open to them and the random mutations that occur. That is the same rule for Duck-Bills as for humans.

Evolution doesn't work differently depending on the species.

The platypus actually supports the case for evolution. It is a primitive, egg laying mammal with a number of reptilian features. This is evidence that mammals derived from reptile ancestors
