9a^2 -100 is a polinomial

if it is equals zero it is an equation,i.e
9a^2 -100 = 0

The character "^" means that "a " is at the second power.

It also can be written as: 9a² -100.

If you want to find the value for "a"
so follow the steps 1,2,3 and 4 below:

1) 9a² -100 =0

2) 9a² =100

3) a² =100/9

4) a = SQRT (100/9)

a = 10/3
a' = -10/3

It all depends on what you are trying to solve for. If it pure algebraic then the solution is straight forward, if it is a finite solution then you have at least one equation missing (or value of "a").
