A minority of Americans still prefer to put their misguided "patriotism" before their humanity, with George Bush's approval rating falling now to 30% it is encouraging that hysteria is at last making way for rationality.
Hopefully the trend will continue, and attempts to escalate the disaster in Iraq with an attack on Iran will be thwarted.

The former. However, one must understand the 2 concepts and deal with them separately for they are neither similar, nor the same as some have suggested. A Double minded man, they say, is shaky in all his ways which includes but not limited to being patriotic. Therefore, it will be difficult to exhibit patriotism without being true to yourself.
Furthermore, it is from a clear, and true understanding of ones self that you can confidently project yourself to others, the society, and your nation(patriotism). Apparently, being true to ones self precedes being patriotic in all its ramifications. For instance, going by a universal order, man was there before the nations arose. Subsequently, man had to be tru to himself before he went on to establish a nation.
Finally, you do not have to be patriotic to be true to yourself. flip it! ...But you do have to be true to your self to be patriotic. In other words, being true to ones self is a necessary foundation to give rise to patriotism.

True to yourself. You're born in a nation, and it is your responsibility to pay taxes. Nothing else, it is not your responsibility to die for your nation, especially if you don't agree with the reason you're fighting. It is your responsibility to yourself to think, though, and to be aware of what is really going on. It is also your responsibility to fight injustice whenever it rises near you, because that too is an individual and not a national concern. You can't rely on your government for anything, so why should you place service to it higher than service to yourself and those you care about? You shouldn't.

Without the 1st, I don't think the 2nd is possible. If you can't be true to yourself & a patriot, you are in the wrong country.

Being true to myself and my value system...which includes being patriotic about my nation (although not necessarily about the politicians running the nation!)

You are the only person who can answer that question.
for me to remain true to myself I have to be patriotic towards
my nation because that's who I am. to reject the patriotism within me would be to reject who I am.
not everyone feels the same as I so like I said you have to answer that question for yourself.

Depends on the person. It'd be great if they went hand in hand, and one's national identity and patriotism were simply part of that person

Be true to yourself... And if your country is obviously going in the wrong direction, don't abandon your country. Instead, do what you can to correct it. Trust me, you'll sleep better at night!
