I just got into my router, put in a WEP hex key, hit apply, and it said the system is restarting, etc. Looks like it stuck because I logged back into my router and the WEP was still there. But when I went to view the available wireless networks and clicked on my connection name, it still says it's not secure, no WEP is used. So how do I know for sure the WEP is working right?

Whenever you make a change to th security settings on a router, you have to refresh the wireless network list in order to see the new settings. Your router most likely did change, if you logged back in and saw the new settings you wated.

Having said that, if you are concerned with security (at least beyond keeping out your non-techy neighbors), then WEP is extremely weak.

WEP can be cracked in a matter of seconds with a Linux system. If you want security, you want WPA-AES PSK (PSK stands for pre-shared key). This is much stronger, and would theoretically take weeks or months to crack that security.

verify the caps lock isn't on and your not stepping into areas. this is obtainable with WEP using one in all those terrible cipher, that it substitute into hacked and somebody replaced the WEP passphrase. WEP could be cracked in a count of seconds (actually). My ideas is to study your router instruction manual to be sure ideas on a thank you to alter your protection over to WPA or if this is an available determination, WPA2.

You may have entered the wep key but you may not have enabled the wep security. Go back to your router set up and verify that you have checked all the boxes etc. to activate your security...
