I am going to start college in January and I was advised to major in Web Design and Computer Graphics. Today I was with a friend who was also going to major in the same thing but changed her mind because she did some research on the job demand for computer graphics and web designs and it isnt all that much because people build their own wesites these days. I like to take photographs and work with different kinds of software. I want to work hard for a degree that is going to help me make good money when I get a job or start a business. Any advice? Thanks to everyone!

Basing your choice of majors on the "jobmarket" is ALWAYS a very bad idea. What you end up doing is selecting a field before you know enough about the subject to know if its right for you. You also confine yourself to a narroow standard of value: the paycheck. And there is absolutely no way of knowing what the job market will be in 5 years--much less 10 when you will really need to be establishing a career track.

For your undergraduate work, choose something YOU are interested in--don't even look at thes so-called "job market guides." You will get far better grades if you are interested in what you are doing. Take some courses in other fields with you r electives to get a feel for what alternatives you might also be interested in.

And of course, the question you have at this point is "But what if I can't get a job?" Trading the restof your life for the false security of a job survey is no solution. But if you are goodat--and enjoy--what you do--your odds will be very good--a lot better in fact. And here are a couple of tips that may help:

1) your "major" will consist of only a minority of your courses. Many people take a double major (if this springboards off your minor, it may require no more than 8 courses--less if you use electives). So you have options--don't committ yourself to early.

And find out what non-academic resources your university has available. There will be internships in different fields (which give youjob experience and a taste of the "real thing"), there are professionals in every field who are only too happy to talk to undergrads--but ralely get a chance because few of you will go knock on their office door and ask! And a wide array of other resources.

Bottom line: THINK FOR YOURSELF! That's what a college education is all about--not job training.

May I suggest computer science? This is the higher reaches of computer work -- the theoretical, the overarching work that looks far into the future but has a firm grounding on what is possible today.

The era of programming, web design, and basic application development is almost over in the United States. Any work that will be done will be done in places like India where computer professionals make far less than they do in the United States. New applications will automate such computer activities as web design.

Majoring in computer science will enable you to be doing the very high level work that will be done in the United States. You would be designing systems that will solve business problems for the company you will be working for. They will be looking to you to redesign their business processes to take full advantage of the latest computer hardware, software, and services.

If this is going to be your first year, declare web design as your major, take some basic course, but also take some courses in other areas you are interested in. Then, when you do find out what you want to do, you can easily switch majors. Most people do it. No one your age is 100% sure of what they want to do, so don't get worked up over it. Explore different things, and the right choice will come to you.

Then you should first consult counselors at your school and choose Undecided for your major so you can decide first because I know some who people who kept changing majors. Go to your school's Career planning center, they probably have some good websites about careers. Think about what you like the best though so you can enjoy working. I think one good career is being a Realtor.
