This is a banking scam to stop customers changing their banks.
On attempting to close an account, the customer is asked to return the gun and on entering the bank with said weapon is promptly shot by a security guard.
The promotion slogan used is 'A bank for life'.
PS I still have a $ account and an old S&W mod 28 - any ideas?

It is possible that some banks might give a gun as a free gift -- there's no real reason that the couldn't -- but it's definitely an isolated incident if one does. Most banks give out toasters or something.
