Milwaukee makes the saw-zall and Skil Makes the skil saw

2006-11-25 11:01:23 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 1 1

All these answers are basically correct. The two terms are brand names used to describe a generic product...it is like where I live most people call carbonated soft drinks 'cokes.'

The reality is that SawZall is the brand name for Milwaukee's reciprocating saw. Likewise, Skilsaw is used to designate the circular saw made by Skil. I know, I know the guy with the really long answer says that a skilsaw refers to a worm drive saw. Actually, whether it is direct drive or worm drive, the term means the same thing. Just talk to the guy down the road who is building a house or doing a remodel and he will tell you that when he says skilsaw, he is talking about a circular saw of any brand.

Skil is a manufacturer and brand name.
A Skilsaw is not a circular saw, but a gear-driven saw.

(A circular saw uses a direct drive DC motor where the circular blade is attached directly to the armature of the motor. They are lightweight -- no gear box -- and have a high pitched motor running at high rpms.)

A gear driven saw has the motor at right angle to the blade, and a gear box (usually a hypoid gear, similar in principle to a worm drive) which drives the circular saw blade. A gear drive saw has a very large amount of torque so it is very hard to stall the motor. Blades used on a gear driven saw usually have a diamond shaped knock-out to attach the blade to the drive arbor.

A Sawzall is a brand of reciprocating saw made by Milwaukee Tool Co. The blade motion is back and forth, and the blades can be anywhere from 6 inches to 18 inches in length. Sawzalls are great for demolition because they can be used in direct plunge cuts, many blades are bi-metal (cut thru both wood and metal) and are very manueverable in tight locations.

A skil saw is generally a round bladed saw used to cut wood. (Skil is the brand name). It generally is called a circular saw.

A Saws All is the name for a "Milwaukee " brand reciprocating saw. This saw looks like a machine gun with the blade extending from the end like the barrel of the gun. The blade moves forward and back rapidly. This type of saw will basically cut anything..Metal, plastic, wood, whatever...

A skil saw has a round blade like a dinner plate and is used to cut straight lines, like down the middle of a piece of plywood.

A saw-zall is used mostly for demolition, etc. You can hold in vertical, horizontial to cut through boards already nailed into place. It's design is similiar to an electric knife but much bigger and stronger.

a saw-zall is like a big electric carving knife your Dad had to carve Roast Beef or Turkey...its only way more powerful with different lengths of blades available. Its handy to cut through walls, cut off fence posts etc.
Skil saw... a trade name like Dewalt or Black and Decker?

Not sure what style of blade you have installed on your saw. If you are trying to cut with a cross cut and you are cutting the wood with the grain. They will have a tendency to kick back if you are not holding the saw at the right angle. And if you are trying to force the saw into the wood. Be sure that safety is your first priority.

they both are brand names, but also generic names for tools. Saw-zall is a reciprocating saw, and skil saw is a circular saw.

A "saws-all" is a reciprocating saw (back and forth action). A "skill saw " is a hand held circular saw. Skill is a brand name. A carpenter would use a skill saw to cut a 2x4, but a saws-all to get into tighter places.
