I've used both Cingular and T-Mobile prepaid. TMO has a better rate, but Cingular offers free mobile-to-mobile minutes. Note however that you get hit with a $1 access charge for every day you make or receive a call so that could get pricy quick. I'm on T-Mobile currently, and a $100 refill gets you 1000 minutes so you're looking at $0.10/minute. Pretty tough to beat. Minutes rollover with each refill, and after you've made Gold Rewards status (spent $100 initially), all subsequent refills extend your account expiration by one year.
If you're using fewer than 300 minutes per month, I would definitely recommend going prepaid. Pretty much every postpaid plan I've seen ends up costing an extra $10 once you throw in the taxes and surcharges. The prepaid per-minute cost already includes these so no ugly surprises there.

I have tried two. I tried the Virgin mobile phone. It cost .25 cents a minute and it was easy to load the money via the internet or using the calling card like things. I also used the Boost moble from Nextel. It was the same price per minute but I really had a hard time loading the money. Most of the time it would not load via the internet and when I would call people, they did not speak english very well.
Someone I know used the Go phone and said that it was ok. But if you are going to talk a lot you need to get a regular cell phone, because the prepaid ones cost a lot in price per minute. I hope this helps.

the truth is that you spend more money on a prepaid song than on a contract phone. trust me. the good thing about a plan is that you have nights and weekends free plus mobile to mobile. with a prepaid you have to watch carefully not to talk too much because you might use too many minutes for the week. for example my Boost Mobile phone gets 100 minutes with a $20 card. I have to watch that for like 3 weeks until I want to get the next card. with a contract all you have to do is pay $20 dollars and you get about 300 minutes and you get fee nights and weekends plus mobile to mobile. it is better in my opinion.

Actually Virgin Mobile is down to 18 cents a minute now..
But if you spend enough money monthly (by topping up - not contract) you can get those nights and weekends too. Texting can come at good rates too.. but still depending on how much you're willing to spend.. Completely depends on how much you want to use your phone. And Virgin is pretty self-explanatory.
