Not neccessarily. I have an old book, from about 1890 or so, that says they are made of glass. Here's the passage:
THE MAGIC CRYSTAL is a ball of pure virgin glass, somewhat in the shape of an egg; the method of using it, is to hold it in the palm of the right hand, retain it there from eleven to twelve o’clock at night, in a dark room, all the time concentrating your thoughts upon the object you desire to see. About twelve o’clock, the crystal becomes quite hot – now look steadily into it, and picture (sic) of scenes that appear are transpiring with friends far distant; in fact, it is asserted that the movements of any one can be known, whether husband, wife, lover or friend.

Only the very very expensive ones are real crystal. You need to be careful if you purchase a crystal ball because the majority of them are lead crystal not genuine crystal.

some are glass, some are quartz crystal, some are made from other semi-precious stones such as obsidian, rose quartz, amethyst, flourite, agate, etc. you can find them at nature stores, or stores like discovery in the mall... they are usally priced between 20-80 bucks... depending on the stone & size that you want, the chinese reconstituted crystal balls are a bit cheaper. Generally, natural crystal balls are cut and polished from a larger stone mass, but in the case of the reconstituted the crystal is ground up, melted & poured into molds...

Some are, but they can be made from any type of reflective stone. Many of us have crystal balls for scrying, and others find that a shiny dark surface works well as does a pail of clear water. I, myself, have 2. One as a beautiful clear quartz crystal and the other is a smaller dark blue glass. Whether glass or crystal they should be free of flaws so they will not distract from the visions.

it really depends on the ball itself. many are glass and are just for show.
o good crystal ball (made from crystal ) will cost between 80 and several thousand dollars. i got mine. made from quartz for 90 dollars on sale. it is about 4 inches in diameter.
my wife had one gifted to her by her mentor it is berrel. the base rock of agate. it is practally priceless.but would cost over 3 grand to buy.
the best way to tell is to look through it. a crystal ball will reflect anything upside down. and a glass ball will act more like a mirror.
the place that is selling it should ahve info on how it was made.
mine was made form brazilian quartz that was crushed to a powder and then melted and formed to a sphere and polished.

They sure are Stormy, and You can get all different types too. I've got a real beauty that is pocket size I scored at a great big open flea market in New Jersey for a buck; un-Freaking-believable!!! When and if You get one be sure to purify it by letting it bath in Sunlight in a window and moonlight over the course of twentyfour hours,. I asked about this myself on Folklore and Mythology when I got mine. Have fun!

I wouldn't believe anything they say on EBay.Many things are just counterfeit made in China or North Korea. Most likely they are just huge glass marbles. Try a large metal container like Nostradamus filled with water.Don't forget your mp3 player too. Maybe you'll see the video?
