If the details given are true, it paints a very bad picture of that country & its citizens. I can't believe how a single dicattor like Mao zedong could keep such a big country closed for so long and continue with his atricities. If it is true, despite being corrupt and amny other things, My India is much better off. I will not like to be born into China, even as a tony insect ever. Submissiveness of whole population to a "gang of four" seems too incredulous.

China is still recovering - the book is true to life - but there were lots of other terrible things too.

Many people fled to other countries (such as Singapore where I live).

In comparision India was better off - even with us dreadful Englishmen ruining your culture
