The purpose of the cauldron is to be a vessel for water, one of the stronger elements. It is necessary to contain the elemental form ( along with the various liquids it is a part of ) of water, in order to use the power of that element to invoke the spirits that are associated with it or offer thanks to the goddess, who created and replenishes all the elements. The cauldron is also a symbol of the goddess, as she is the vessel through which life is perpetuated again and again through the endless cycle.

The cauldron is a symbol of the womb, of fertility. It is generally associated with a goddess ( sometimes cerridwen) but it also has an an association to Dagda, the father or the Celtic Pantheon. It has been used as a cooking vessel, for cleaning, for butchering, for rendering fats, I personally use my cauldron as a fire pot. It is a safe place to place my offerings while they burn. I prefer modern pots & pans for cooking & potion making. i think i might like a larger cast iron pot for cooking stews & such while camping, but since hubby is not the outdoorsy type, i will save that purchase for another day... Like many of the witches tools they were common household items... such as the broom and the knife...

The general idea in fairy tales and such was to mix potions. But a cauldron probably has more practical uses as described by Alexis W.
