I don't know but that pisses me off too. I guess it makes me uncomfortable when the person in front of me stares. My logical guess would be that the train goes in different directions during different parts of the day. When the train is going one direction, they have to bring it back at one point. So they make the seats where whatever direction it's going in, you can see it at different times.

To encourage people to bring a book or a magazine and read on the train. :) You can broaden your mind while simultaneously ignoring other passengers.
