Because you can practically carry an entire computer on a U3 Smart drive. Everything runs off the flash drive, including: office applications, Internet applications and security software applications. Imagine plugging the drive to any computer and having access to all your files and the software programs to work with them. U3 is a standard agreed upon by several major software vendors. And a lot of vendors are joining the U3 community. Of course any flash drive, not only U3 flash drives, can store files and run programs. However, the software for regular flash drive is sparse and usually limited to open source software (e.g. Firefox, OpenOffice, Keepass...). For example, you won't find a McAfee antivirus for regular flash drives.
