It is completely legal as long as it is your CD and you do not give away the CD-R. If you give away the CD, you have to destroy or provide the CD-R as well to the same person.

Basicaly, as long as it is your property you can have as many copys as you want, but they have to be your property too. Record companys have no beef with that either.

Their concern is that you are not giving copywritten material away to people who would be potential customers.

copying a store bought CD to your own CD-R to give as a gift or to sell, yes. Copyright Laws.
If you want to be 'correct' about it, you can contact the manufacturer of the CD and ask for permission but they will not grant it if you intend to sell it.
Same way with photographs. Even though you bought the picture (or in your case, the CD) you did not buy the rights to that picture (or CD)

technically not if you own the CD because you are making a "back up" which is perfectly legal

if you have the actual cd it is concidered backing it up, and in that case its legal, otherwise it is illegal, but 99% of people have illegal music.

everything is perfectly legel until one gets caught. But it shouldent be illegal unless the music was stolen off the internet.

depends on who you believe. some say the fair use laws make it ok to copy. the record companies say its illegal
