dont feel sorry for the fantails its the circle of life, lol no just got about a 100 of them trying to weed out the undesirables, multiple tanks figured i always wanted an oscar and between the store bought food and the guppies as a treat, more concerned about the substrate

Crowd control?! Why breed the fantails if you're not prepared to take care of them properly? Even if you didn't like the fish why not just give them away? What a cruel way to emulate the aquatic circle of life... Anyway, to answer your question, my experience with oscars shows that they'll even be happy in a tank without any substrate. I do think that gravel is better than sand for the oscar.

they can change what the gravel looks like because they will toss the gravel around and rearange decoratons. I am getting one for christmas, not sure what variaty of the oscar to get, but my tanks gonna have sand at the bottem, rocks in the corners but nothing big in the middle, gonna give him the most room possible, and maybe two or three potting plants because they seem to be good for oscars for me, with some artificial plants that i might weight them down, or put the river stones around them, hope this helps.

the oscar is in the ciclid family and you can not mix them with your tropical fish. Do not worry about crowding, because he will eat all of them. When oscars get bigger, you will feed him small goldfish. They are very intelligent fish. But they are meant to be in pairs are by themselves. I had mine in sand but had a large rock for them to hide behind. Sorry to bring you the bad news on your tropical fish. I am surprised the pet shop did not tell you this. sus04mc@yahoo.com
