its an old 327 and its called a road breather aka early engine vent which was made into a PCV valve. you can block it off with a freeze plug but make sure you install a pcv valve or you will blow gaskets out. this is of course if its on the passenger side of the block, if its on the drivers side it could be an oil sending unit but on the older blocks this hole could also be by the oil filter mounting area

No undesirable or gruesome...... the 327 substitute into Chevys ultimate engine, yet they opted for the bigger CI 350 and the 350 carried on for some years.... the 327 has the comparable bore because of the fact the 350 however the stroke is smaller, so the 327 revs greater. IMO the 327 is an rather good engine and greater advantageous than the 350.... or the different chevy SB engine.

if it's a 60's model...there should be an oil pressure sending unit there or a fitting for a mechanical gage. Some of the older models had a vent tube back there as well. It was a metal tube which came out of the back of the engine and ran down the side of the transmission. This was later replaced by the PCV valve. I'm going to guess if it's the oil sending unit...you don't have the engine in a car and running...cause if you did...it would be spewing oil all over the place.

if you mean the big hole way in the back of the block behind the distributor hole then that is the crankcake vent hole

originally had a tube called the road draft tube

this was eliminated for the 1968 model year when PVC system was required by Federal emissions

it is about 1.00" diameter
