Lady Macbeth is a very compelling character, perhaps one of the most intriguing characters in the play. She wants better things for her husband and ultimately herself, and sees an opportunity via the king's undoing. Different people will read different things into the character, and these differences will make for very different theatrical interpretations. Something that is important to remember with Shakespeare is that he wrote for the everyman by portraying the everyman.
My personal advice would be to read and re-read the play, act by act and try to find the humanity of each of the characters, not just the Lady MacBeth. Once you do, you'll begin to understand her much more clearly.

I don't agree with Agent Stacy's response. Lady M doesn't come across as being totally evil or corrupt. I think she is the original Desperate housewife. She is an intelligent, ambitious woman who, because of her position and the time she lives in cannot pursue her own path to success. She can only drive her good-hearted, strong but dumb husband Macbeth to pursue greatness, via the murder of a king. Trouble is once Macbeth starts down this path to ambition and intrigue he cannot get off it. He must commit more murders to maintain his position. Lady M in the meantime is left alone, she goes crazy with guilt and grief.
